Big Data Course
Big data is the phrase used to describe a large amount of data – either structured or unstructured. Ninety percent of the data in the world today has been created in the last two years alone. And most of the data is unstructured. Every minute YouTube users watch 4.1 million videos. Google delivers results for 3.6 million searches. Wikipedia users publish 600 new edits. According to computer giant IBM, 2.5 exabytes – that’s 2.5 billion gigabytes (GB) – of data was generated every day in 2012. That’s big by anyone’s standards. “About 75% of data is unstructured, coming from sources such as text, voice and video,” says Mr. Miles.
So when such amount of data is being generated every day then how you will manage it. That’s where Hadoop comes to rescue. Hadoop is an open source tool from the ASF – Apache Software Foundation. Most of Hadoop code is written by Yahoo, IBM, Facebook, Cloudera. Hadoop provides parallel processing of data as it works on multiple machines simultaneously. The more computing nodes you use, the more processing power you have. It has captured around 90% of big data market. Hadoop is not only a storage system but is a platform for data storage and processing. It has the ability to store and process huge amount of any kind of data especially from social media and IoT.
You can also build recommendation engine in Hadoop. One of the most popular analytical uses by some of Hadoop’s largest adopters is for web-based recommendation systems. Facebook – people you may know. LinkedIn – jobs you may be interested in. Netflix, eBay, Hulu – items you may want.
